Digital section toll
If you are driving on Austria's motorways, you need a vignette: either a digital one or a sticker. On six sections of the Austrian motorway and expressway network, you need a toll ticket, the so-called (digital) section toll (formerly also known as special toll or video toll).
The reason for this is the particularly high construction costs for special structures such as tunnels. This enables the refinancing of these higher costs. These section toll segments are excluded from the vignette obligation.
You need the digital section toll here
The interactive map below shows the sections on which section tolls must be paid in Austria.
- You will need a vignette on the orange motorways and expressways.
- On the green sections, you must pay the section toll. Buy in a single click:
The following digital section toll products are available
Single trip
You can use the single trip ticket to travel once on the selected section toll segment in one direction. The single trip can be redeemed for one year from the date of purchase.
Multi-trip card
You can use the multi-trip card to travel on the selected section toll segment for 365 days from the start date.
Digital section toll FLEX
Drive now, pay later:
Register once for the Digital section toll FLEX service in the ASFINAG toll shop and drive worry-free through all Austrian toll stations. With the FLEX service, every journey through an ASFINAG toll station is automatically debited from the saved means of payment at the applicable rate.
- Digital section toll products are license plate number-specific.
- The currently valid section toll rates are displayed in the purchase process after selecting the respective product.
How does the digital section toll work
If you have a digital section toll product, the system will electronically recognise your vehicle license plate number when you pass a toll station and the barriers will open automatically.
You can use the leftmost green lane and pass the toll station without stopping. Apart from the green lane, you can also use any other departure lane, with the exception of the rightmost GO lane (only vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes may pass through here).
Exception: On the A 13 Brenner motorway and the A 9 Pyhrn motorway, you can also use the GO lane with a valid section toll product.
Which ASFINAG toll stations are there
There are six ASFINAG toll stations on Austria's motorways and expressways where section tolls must be paid:
▼ A 9 Pyhrn motorway / Bosruck tunnel
There are two section toll segments of the A 9 Pyhrn motorway. Section 1 (Bosruck tunnel) is located between the Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning junctions.
Here you can pass through the left-hand green lane without stopping as well as the far right-hand GO lane with a pre-purchased digital toll product.

Motorcycles and trailers – what to look out for
As a motorcyclist, you can also use the digital section toll or the digital section toll FLEX. Save yourself the payment process and pass through toll stations faster.
Passage with a digital section toll ticket or with the digital section toll FLEX works differently for motorcycles or passenger cars with trailers at the toll stations than for passenger cars without trailers. This is due to the automatic license plate recognition in the toll lane:
▼ In the (regular) toll lane open to all vehicles:
the vehicle licence plate is only ever read from the front. Vehicle license plate numbers of motorcycles cannot be recognised automatically because they are attached to the back of the motorcycle. For passenger cars with trailers, the two license plate numbers differ. The barriers remain closed. In this case, please inform the toll staff of your license plate number. When the toll station is unmanned, press the help button and a member of the service staff will answer. The licence plate number is used to check whether a digital section toll ticket has been purchased or whether the digital section toll FLEX has been activated. If either of these is the case, the barriers will open.
▼ In the section toll lane (usually on the far left):
the license plate numbers are read from the front and back. However, as motorcycle vehicle license plate numbers are on two lines, and in the case of passenger cars with trailers, the two license plate numbers differ, automatic recognition is not possible here. If the barriers do not open automatically, you will be diverted. Use one of the other lanes open for motorcycles or passenger cars and proceed as described above.
